project: Arundo Eradication and Coordination Project

Arundo donax, or Giant Reed, is a tall bamboo-like weed that is taking over creeks and rivers. Arundo is threatening riparian (streamside) ecosystems by crowding out native plants and animals. It can cause flooding and is also highly flammable, endangering surrounding trees and houses.

The Arundo Eradication and Coordination Program is a regional weed control effort that focuses on the eradication of Arundo and the restoration of riparian habitat. The Arundo Program is currently active in 5 watersheds around the SF Bay Area, and is planning to expand into 6 additional watersheds throughout the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. The Sonoma Ecology Center (SEC) administers the Arundo Program and Team Arundo del Norte, a coalition of public agencies, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and private property owners. The SEC is also coordinating Arundo eradication efforts throughout the Sonoma Creek Watershed.
