Understanding the environmental challenges facing Sonoma Valley requires detailed knowledge of how our landscape has evolved through time. The Sonoma Valley Historical Ecology Project combines the natural sciences, historical research and the knowledge of local residents to chronicle these changes. The benefits gained from developing the 'Story of the Land' include: providing valuable background information from current watershed studies, helping guide effective resotration efforts, and disseminating knowledge to the community, thus creating a long-range perspective that will serve as a foundation for making intelligent choices for the future.
